Ispra transport plan: your opinion counts!

Today during the LSC Plenary meeting, the Head of the Assets and Logistics Unit, together with the Ispra Transport Officer, gave an overview of the activities of the department and answered some questions related to transportation and access. A document containing some innovative ideas for possible future improvements is under preparation. A draft may be found at this link.
We would be grateful if you could find time to have a look and give us any comments or suggestions that we will pass on to the concerned service.

  1. The plan gives few big changes and is not ambitious. Austerity seems to be the main driver, whilst investing in modernization of mobility could be a main driver for a new economy. A missed opportunity is the use of the trainfacility next to the site.
The train calls in Ispra and arrives in 7 (!) minutes in Laveno, whereas a car or a bus will take at least 20 minutes.
Currently this train has a timetable not suited for the Ispra site personnel. It would be recommendable that the JRC helps the authorities to reactivate this train-service in the morning and evening for example calling at Ispra at 8.15 and 8.45 and 17.30 and 18.00. Thus providing a service also to the public in the province and reducing commuting along the lake considerably, and thus also helping to improve the safety of cyclists. Furthermore the train can be an ideal means to combine fast commuting with cycling.
The train service could eventually replace partially the bus services of the lines going to Laveno-Luino and Sesto Calende. But more important it would significantly change the balance for the whole public in the area at the benefit of public transport.
